Legislating Obstetrics Safety?

From the Wall Street Journal’s Health Blog comes a story about the interplay between research and policy.  Based on a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which reported results from an obstetrics safety program, which trained teams in standard protocols to reduce the risk of  birth injury, a bill is being introduced in the New York state assembly that would mandate its use for all hospitals in the state.

Both the leader of the hospitals involved (Cornell Weill Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian) and the authors of the study have objected, noting that the findings may not be transferrable to all institutions.
