New database – GIDEON (Global Infectious Disease & Epidemiology Network)

The Taubman Health Sciences Library (THL) is pleased to announce a new resource:  GIDEON (Global Infectious Disease & Epidemiology Network).  It is an interactive database that provides a wealth of information on health research and current trends in tropical and infectious diseases, epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial chemotherapy, and toxicology. It provides convenient access to expert information that can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of exposure to exotic (and common) diseases and a wide range of microbiological and toxic agents.

GIDEON’s worldwide data sources include international literature, adhering to the standards of evidence-based medicine and providing over 19,000 notes on the status of specific infections, with over 5,000 images, 30,000 graphs, 347 interactive maps, and more than 150,000 linked references.

GIDEON’s 3 modules include:

    • Infectious Diseases — covers 340+ infectious disease in 231 countries with information on 500+ anti-infective drugs and vaccines
    • Microbiology — covers 1500+ microbial taxa (bacteria, mycobacteria, yeasts)
    • Toxicology — covers 3,000+ toxic agents

Find GIDEON on library research guides for public health (for example, Environmental Health Sciences under Toxicology) or simply search for it on the THL website in the search box in the upper left.
